Family Tree

Features

Everything Family Tree does today, from the first person you add to a shared tree of hundreds.

Building and exploring the tree

  • Auto layout

    Lays itself out

Add people and relationships; the tree arranges itself into generations. When a big family gets tangled, one click untangles it.

  • Timeline

    A timeline of your family

Line everyone up by year of birth, so you can see who overlapped with whom and how the generations stack.

  • Search

    Find anyone fast

Search by name, filter by place of birth, and switch on focus to fade everyone except one person and their closest relatives.

  • Memories

    Photos and documents

Keep several photos for each person in the order you choose, and attach documents such as certificates and letters to the people they belong to.

  • Partial dates

Dates you are not sure of

Record just a year, or a month and year, when that is all the family remembers. Maiden names, places of birth and death, and a life story too.

  • Roles

    Share with the right people

Owners, editors and viewers. A viewer linked to their own place in the tree sees their branch, not everyone else’s. Viewers can ask the owner for edit access.

  • History

    Every change on record

Each addition, edit and deletion is logged with who made it and when, so a shared tree never changes without a trace.

  • Neo4j

    Built on a graph

People are points and relationships are lines in a graph database, so questions like “everyone four generations down from this couple” are one query.

  • Scale

    Big families welcome

The public demo holds 226 people across five generations and still lays out and zooms in a browser.

What you can record about each person

  • First and last name, and previous or maiden names
  • Birth and death dates, in full or just the year or month you know
  • Place of birth and place of death
  • Gender and a free-form life story
  • Several photos, in the order you choose
  • Documents such as certificates, letters and records
  • Parents, partners and siblings, drawn as lines on the tree
  • A link to the family member’s own account, so they see their own branch

Sharing and control

  • Owner

    You decide

The owner shares the tree, sets each person’s role and answers requests for edit access.

  • Editor

    Family who help

Editors add and change people, relationships, photos and documents. Every change is in the history.

  • Viewer

    Family who look

Viewers browse without changing anything. Linked to their own place in the tree, they see their own branch.
